First Capital Connect gave us a new year’s gift that we could all do without – a rise in ticket prices of up to 46%. It is still unclear how much all ticket prices across the network will rise, but some price rises have been reported in the media as shown below. According to Campaign for Better Transport fares are set to go up by 25% over the next four years – that’s £1,300 more for some season tickets. You can join their campaign for fair fares at www.bettertransport.org.uk/fairfares/.

My weekly season ticket (Winchmore Hill->Enfield
Chase) has gone up from £7.70 to £14.10 – an increase of 83%. I
have no idea how FCC can justify this.
My monthly tube and rail card for zones 1-6 plus Euston to Milton Keynes has gone up from £450 to £476 – 5.7%.
5.7% isn’t that shocking compared to some, but frankly £450 p/m was hardly giving it away.
Hi
I travel from Cambridge to Hammersmith once or twice a week and have been purchasing the an any time day return to Zone 1/2. This cost £34 in 2010 but now costs £40, a 17% fair increase. This on a train service where often you can’t get a seat!
This is shocking!
My monthly ticket from St Albans to Hendon has increased from £182.40 to £201.60 – which I make to be a rise of 10.5% or thereabouts
Hi,
Just renewed my monthly ticket from Peterborough to Welwyn Garden City. Increased from £251.60 to £288 – an increase of 14.5%.
They’ve just lost another customer. I’m going to find alternative transport.
Well done FCC – money before brains!
I buy my new season ticket next week and will let you know then – but let’s not also forget the increase in car park charges at Thameslink stations. My monthly car park charge has gone up from £90 to £100 – that’s an 11.1% increase.
I only travel one stop Hitchin -> Stevenage and
usually buy a weekly ticket. It’s gone up from £14.50 to £16, 11%
not as much as other people have posted but I rarely get a seat. I
was expecting it to be around 6%
St Albans to Elstree cheap day return was £5 now £7 – a 40%
rise.
I just bought my season ticket and it has gone up from £387
to £427 a month. Up £40 a month or 10%! Flitwick to St
Pancras.
Am I in the minority? Daily travelcard gone down by
50p?
You must be in the minority! My weekly ticket from Ally Pally to Welwyn just gone up from £35 to £49; a 40% increase. Even the daily ticket has increased by 10% (£9.10 to £10).
The employee at the ticket booth said that they have done away with disounts on weekly tickets, so having a photocard and weekly ticket doesn’t give a discount anymore. Well done you robbing gits and now I will be driving every day.
My off peak day return from Elstree Borehamwood to Bedford
cost £8 and a bit last autumn, with a senior railcard. On Saturday
Jan 8 2011 I had to pay £11.20. I checked it out at the Bedford end
and they said that was correct. I expected an increase, but this is
outrageous
My monthly ticket between Enfield Chase and Hertford North has gone from 88 to 99 pounds – around an 11/12% increase.
If the service was good and trains weren’t late or cancelled I wouldn’t mind too much, but seeing as service is so rubbish I massively resent the increase.
Just to provide a little perspective on the latest fare rise and FCC fares in general…
I often travel to Switzerland for holidays and to visit family and nearly always use the train system there. It is second to none – clean, reliable, comfortable and the Swiss railway infrastructure is probably the best in the world. The current price of a monthly pass for unlimited travel on the entire network throughout Switzerland (including some buses, boats trams etc) is CHF 305 which is equivalent to £200 at todays very low exchange rate (~£120 at exchange rate of two years ago!). The question is how can FCC justify prices which are so much higher when the service is so much poorer?
Was considering moving out of London to St Albans but travel costs is making me rethink and even worse now with fare rise. For two of us that will be 7600 per year to go to work. That’s a lot of money I could put towards a higher mortgage in London.
